Dear Taxpayers,

Under the direction of Attorney General Austin Knudsen and motor vehicle Administrator Laurie Bakri, the state motor vehicle division has put all costs of state equipment, IT services, and supplies on the shoulders of the county treasurer’s office. If counties choose to continue providing titles, registrations, and plates for your vehicles this is the financial burden they will have to endure.

We have tried to set up a meeting with AG Knudsen to discuss what counties have financially provided in all the years before their latest decision. This office pays for employee wages and benefits so we can provide services to our customers.

Most fees that are collected for vehicle transactions are not kept in the county and are sent to the state each month. Counties would like to have some discussion about these costs but they hear nothing from Knudsen or his office. The state motor vehicle office has told treasurers throughout the state that they have no choice if they want to continue providing the service to customers.

What does this mean to you as a taxpayer:

Due to a lack of response from Knudsen and Bakri, the budget for the Judith Basin County Treasurer’s office and IT provider will need to increase. This budget increase can affect your taxes.

If counties do not comply with these requirements, the services will be outsourced to a state online service or private entity. This will result in higher fees and the possibility of traveling to a larger county with longer wait lines.

This is not what smaller counties, with a limited budget want to happen because they care about the service they have been providing to their customers.

Thank you,

Judith Basin County Treasurer’s Office
